General education transportation eligibility is based on a student’s grade level and the walking distance between home and school. Based on a distance calculation, students eligible for full fare transportation may receive either stop to school transportation or a Student MetroCard.

Sometimes we make an exception for a student who would not ordinarily be eligible.
Parents and guardians, along with their child's school (and a physician in the case of a medical exception), must complete an exception request form related to the reason for the request. Ask your school's transportation coordinator for the form you need.
You can submit an exception request for the following reasons:
Parents and school staff are encouraged to use OPT Customer Service number (718)392-8855 to report any service issues. When calling it would be helpful to have the students ID# and the respective Route#.

Children who are in special education, pre-K, or early intervention(Open external link) programs are eligible for curb-to-curb yellow bus service if their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) recommends special transportation. Because pre-K bus vendors work very closely with parents, we urge you to provide your vendor with your emergency contact information.
